Syringa vulgaris

Shrub: Lilac

Height: 10-12′ Width: 8-10′
Sun: Full Sun Zone: 2

Very hardy and vigorous, this reliable, old-fashioned lilac shrub is most often used as a tall, informal hedge or windbreak. Prolific bloomer of very fragrant, lavender-purple, single blooms on upright panicles in spring. Smooth, heart-shaped, green foliage turns yellow in fall. Vase-shaped, dense, suckering habit: great for windbreaks, hedging and screens. Good cut flower. Best flowering in full sun. Prefers moist, well drained soil but is drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Lilacs bloom on old wood: prune right after flowering is finished to allow next years flower buds to set and to promote strong new growth. Can be pruned back strongly to control shape or left unsheared for a more informal hedge; cultivating closely beside the hedge can help control suckering. When planting as bareroot, space 2-3′ apart.

Available in select bareroot and potted sizes.
