Black Beauty Elder
Sambucus nigra ‘Gerda’
Shrub: Elder/Elderberry
Height: 7-8′ | Width: 6-7′ |
Sun: Full to Part Sun | Zone: 4 |
Showy, dark purple-black foliage with large, lemon-scented, pink flower clusters in early summer that turn into black, ornamental berries that attract birds. Best colour in full sun, foliage darkens as it ages. Fast-growing shrub with an upright spreading form that makes a good specimen or background contrast plant. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Can be pruned back heavily in late winter/early spring before new growth emerges as needed to control size and rejuvenate old stems to keep plant compact and bushy.
Available in select potted sizes.
