Black Lace Elder
Sambucus nigra ‘Eva’
Shrub: Elder/Elderberry
| Height: 6-8′ | Width: 6-7′ |
| Sun: Full to Part Sun | Zone: 4 |
Striking, lacy, finely-cut, purple-black foliage on this upright rounded shrub. Large clusters of pink buds open to lemon-scented, fragrant, pink-white flowers in early summer and contrast well with the dark foliage. Red-black ornamental berries in fall attracts birds. Best foliage colour in full sun. Great specimen or background plant, sometimes used as an alternative to Japanese maple. Prefers moist, rich, well-drained soil. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. May die back to the snowline in zone 3 but as a vigorous grower it will regrow quickly; prune out any dead wood as needed. Prune in late winter/early spring before new growth emerges to control size or to rejuvenate old stems and to keep plant compact and bushy.
Available in select potted sizes.
