Shrub: Currant

Glossy, lobed green foliage on a dense, rounded shrub that makes an excellent hedge. Small, inconspicuous yellow flowers in spring followed by occasional, tiny red berries on female plants; yellow fall foliage. Very hardy: tolerates a wide variety of soils and is drought tolerant in well-drained soil once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Can be pruned into a formal hedge: shearing can be done anytime, more aggressive pruning should be done in late winter/early spring before new growth emerges.
