Showy, reddish-purple foliage all season on smooth, purple branches. Small, fragrant, pinkish-white blooms in spring before the leaves are fully opened. Some tiny, inconspicuous ornamental fruit that attracts birds. Great hardy, colour contrast shrub with an upright, oval habit: best foliage colour in full sun. Not a pollinator for fruit trees or shrubs. Drought tolerant once established: prefers well-drained soil and does not do well in standing water. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Blooms on old wood: annual pruning right after flowering helps keep the shrub dense and compact; any winter die back can be pruned out as needed.
