Shrub: Ninebark

Small, upright shrub with dense, deep burgundy, serrated foliage. Clusters of small, button-like, pinkish-white flowers in spring. Showy red seed capsules in fall and peeling bark. Great colour contrast shrub for small areas. Best foliage colour in full sun. Tolerant of a wide variety of soil conditions; is drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Flowers on old wood: prune after flowering to maintain shape. To rejuvenate an old plant, cut back strongly in late winter/early spring.
