Berberis thunbergii ‘Royal Cloak’

Upright form on this medium to fast-growing, cold-hardy shrub with spiny stems. Large, oval, purple-red foliage on arching branches; red fall colour. Small, yellow spring flowers are followed by glossy red, ornamental berries in fall. Foliage colour is best when planted in full sun. Excellent as a specimen shrub, or a barrier hedge because of its thorns. Prefers moist, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Prune any winter dieback in early spring.
