Dwarf, compact, slow-growing shrub and outstanding foliage colour on spiny stems. Dense, new foliage emerges green in spring and matures to bright golden-yellow, then to orange-hued in fall. Small, yellow spring flowers are followed by red, ornamental berries in fall that persist into winter. Foliage colour is best when planted in full sun. Great as a colour contrast, specimen plant or a low, barrier hedge because of its thorns. Prefers moist, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Prune any winter dieback in early spring.
