Showy, compact and rounded, slow-growing shrub with spiny stems. Deep crimson-red foliage that matures to scarlet-red in fall. Yellow spring flowers and small, bright-red, ornamental berries in fall that persist into winter. Foliage colour is best when planted in full sun. Great as a specimen plant, or a low, barrier hedge because of its thorns. Prefers moist, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Prune any winter dieback in early spring.
