Dwarf, globe-shaped, slow-growing shrub with spiny stems. New growth emerges red and matures to dense, deep-purple foliage, then turns into scarlet in fall. Yellow spring flowers followed by sparse, ornamental, red fruit in fall that persists into winter. Foliage colour is best when planted in full sun. Great as a specimen plant for small, sunny spaces or as a low, barrier hedge. Prefers moist, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Prune any winter dieback in early spring.
