Pembina Plum
Prunus nigra x salicina ‘Pembina’
Fruit: Plum
| Height: 16-20′ | Width: 10-13′ |
| Sun: Full Sun | Zone: 3 |
Small, upright, vase-shaped canopy on this hardy plum tree. Clusters of fragrant, white spring blooms cover the tree before green foliage appears; yellow fall colour. Medium, 1.5-2″ size, round fruit with dark-red skin and a purple blush, yellow-orange flesh; semi-clingstone. Thick, moderately sour skin and sweet, juicy flesh; good for fresh eating and jam. Ripens late summer (late August to early September). Late bloomer. Prefers moist, well-drained soil. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all-purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. For major pruning wait until late winter while tree is dormant; suckers or dead, broken, and diseased branches, can be removed anytime. Prune while young to create open centered branching to allow for even sunlight which results in better ripening of fruit and good air circulation.
Requires cross-pollination with another plum that blooms at the same time (Brookred Plum) or a mid-season bloomer (Western Sand Cherry, Opata Cherry-Plum, Tecumseh Plum). Same time bloomers are best but mid-season may also pollinate early or late bloomers. For best results plant trees no farther than 100′ away from each other.
Available in select potted sizes.
