Compact and upright form on this hardy, prairie-native shrub bearing highly nutritious fruit. White spring blooms and oval, green foliage that turns a vivid orange-red in fall. Sweet and juicy, firm, purple-blue fruit that is great for fresh eating, pies, jams, and freezing. Ripens in July. Suckering shrub; does great planted as a hedge, in a border, or as a single specimen. Also known as Juneberry or Serviceberry. Prefers moist, well-drained soil with best fruit production in full sun; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all-purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Not much pruning is needed: thick, unproductive branches should be pruned in early spring before new growth emerges; suckers, or dead, broken, and diseased branches, can be removed anytime.
Self-pollinating but planting another variety close by will increase fruit yield.
Available in select potted sizes.
