Native, slow-growing, long-lived evergreen with a conical shape that becomes rounded with age. Long, blue-green, soft needles in bundles of 5 on flexible, irregular branches. Long brown cones and furrowed, grey-brown bark. Native tree that ranges from Alberta to Texas. Good for reclamation areas and mass planting. Best growing in full sun but is tolerant of partial shade. Prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil and tolerates dry soil and wind once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Requires little pruning, heavy pruning should be done before new growth emerges in late winter/early spring; dead or broken branches can be removed as needed.
