Native, rugged evergreen with a tall, slender, open growth habit. Blue-green, twisted needles in bunches of 2 that become yellow tinted with maturity and during winter. Fine-scaled, orange-brown to reddish bark on a straight trunk and prickly, inward facing cones. Very hardy tree that is good for shelterbelts and reclamation areas. Prefers moist, well-drained soil but once established is adaptable to dry and sandy soils and drought. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Requires little pruning, heavy pruning should be done before new growth emerges in late winter/early spring; dead or broken branches can be removed as needed.
