Montgomery Blue Spruce
Picea pungens ‘Montgomery’
Evergreen: Spruce
| Height: 10-12′ | Width: 5-7′ |
| Sun: Full Sun | Zone: 2 |
Compact, very dense, conical evergreen with short, intensely blue needles. Starts out as a mounded shrub and eventually forms a leader to become more upright. Holds it vibrant blue colour well. Very hardy, slow-growing, spruce that is great as a specimen or foundation plant. Prefers slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil and is drought and wind tolerant once established (do not let stand in water). Fertilize in spring with a good compost or all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Soil can be top-dressed with aluminum sulfate if needed to intensify blue colour. Little pruning needed: prune broken or dead branches as needed, heavy pruning should be done late winter/early spring before new growth emerges. Can be sheared for a more formal look while tree is actively growing in early summer by trimming back the new growth by one-third.
Available in select potted and caliper sizes.
