Native, tall spruce with green, short, soft needles on a broad pyramidal shape. Slightly scaly, thin, gray bark. Small cones come with maturity and start out reddish and mature to light brown. Best if protected during establishment. Good large specimen, naturalization or mass planting evergreen. Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and is drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Little pruning needed: prune broken or dead branches as needed, heavy pruning should be done late winter/early spring before new growth emerges.
