Ponderosa Pine
Pinus ponderosa
Evergreen: Pine
Height: 45-50′ | Width: 16-25′ |
Sun: Full Sun | Zone: 3 |
Large, open, pyramidal evergreen with long, green needles in bundles of 3 that can take on a yellow hue in winter. Showy, furrowed, orange-brown bark and large, egg-shaped cones with stiff prickles. Moderately fast-growing. Its tall and imposing shape makes it a great windbreak and shelterbelt tree for large areas. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once established but does not tolerate standing water. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Little pruning necessary; to encourage fuller growth, shear or pinch new growth (candles) when actively growing in late spring/early summer. Dead or broken branches can be removed as needed.
Available in select potted and caliper sizes.
