Small and compact, low-mounding, slow-growing shrub with spiny stems. Rich burgundy-red foliage that darkens to a deep red in fall. Yellow spring blooms followed by red, ornamental berries in fall. Foliage colour is best when planted in full sun. Great as a specimen plant, or as a low, barrier hedge because of its thorns. Prefers moist, well-drained soil; drought tolerant once established. Fertilize in spring with a good compost or an all purpose fertilizer before new growth emerges. Prune any winter dieback in early spring.
